Updated May 3rd 2016 Meeting Information

Because the weather is predicted to be chilly and damp, we will be having our meeting at the SOSNA Office again this month, at 7 PM. Hope the weather cooperates come June so that we can resume meeting at the park.

Bring Your Own Dinner – Tuesday May 3rd

Ready for a picnic?  Well bring your dinner out to the park on Tuesday night and meet some of your neighbors.  Relax on the bench and watch the kids run around.  Look at the progress of the new house being built on Montrose.

At 7pm, we’ll have our Friends of Julian Abele Park meeting.  So please join us and find out what fun events and plans we have for the summer.  The meeting will be held at the SOSNA office at 1901 Christian Street in the event of rain.

Love Your Park Saturday May 7th, 10 AM- Noon

Love Your Park Week, May 7- 14th 2016

We would love to see you at our “Love Your Park” event, Saturday May 7th, from 10 AM to Noon. We’ll have ongoing lessons in weed pulling and identification and we will have 1/4 of a truckload of mulch to spread (filling in holes!) and mulching our trees.

You witnessed the hard work and efforts of our Fall “Love Your Park” volunteers in the blossoming of the many daffodils and tulips this Spring. While what we’re doing won’t have as dramatic an impact (well, the weed-pulling might) every bit counts.

This is a good time to remind everyone in our neighborhood that uses Julian Abele Park that very little park support comes from the City; they cut the grass, sure, but we water it; we seed it. We sweep the sidewalks, pick up the trash, pull the weeds, we keep an eye on things. If you care about Julian Abele Park, our May 7th event is a good way to get started.

Since it’s Spring and we’re about to launch the annual “Love Your Park” campaign, we’d like to point you to these two Facebook pages and the My Philly Park/Fairmount Park Conservancy website with information about our partners in our neighborhood parks. You might not connect them to our park, but the services and coordination they manage are vital:

22nd Street Bike Racks- Julian Abele Park

The Friends of Julian Abele Park are pleased to report the presence of two bike racks, located on the 22nd Street side of the Park.

We are not certain who our mysterious benefactor(s) is/are, but we are grateful that another project to improve our park has been achieved. May they see good use…especially this coming Summer.

More on that soon, so stay tuned….

Julian Abele Park- Farmer’s Market Update, April 2016

The Friends of Julian Abele Park regret to announce that there will be no Farmer’s Market this 2016 season. Our vendor of the past two years, Highland Orchards, is not able to come. We have reached out to Farm to City and The Food Trust for options and have not been able to land any vendors. If we have any changes we will let you know.

For fans of Highland Orchards, don’t forget they are at Fitler Square Farmer’s Market on Saturdays (throughout the year) and staff a stand at Schuylkill River Park (end of Spruce Street entrance) on Wednesdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
